The Sweet: A Brief History
The Sweet's origins can be traced back to British soul band Wainwright's Gentlemen, which included vocalist Chris Wright, bassist Jan Frewer, and guitarists Jim Searle and Alfred Fripp. The band formed around 1962 and were initially known as Unit 4. They changed their name to Wainwright's Gentlemen in 1964 and released a few singles, but had little success. Wright left the band in 1967 and was replaced by Brian Connolly, who had previously sung with The Eagles (not to be confused with the American band of the same name).
Connolly and drummer Mick Tucker decided to form their own band in 1968 and recruited bassist Steve Priest, who had played with The Army. They called themselves The Sweetshop and played a mix of pop and soul covers. They soon shortened their name to The Sweet and signed a record deal with Fontana/EMI in 1970. However, their first four singles flopped and they were dropped by the label. They then signed with RCA Records and were paired with songwriters Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman, who wrote catchy bubblegum pop songs for them.
The Sweet scored their first hit in 1971 with \"Funny Funny\", which reached number 13 on the UK charts. They followed it with more hits like \"Little Willy\", \"Wig-Wam Bam\", and \"Block Buster!\", which topped the UK charts in 1973. The band also developed a glam rock image, wearing glittery outfits and makeup on stage. However, they were unhappy with the control that Chinn and Chapman had over their music and wanted to write their own songs. They began to do so on the B-sides of their singles and on their albums.
In 1974, The Sweet released their first self-produced album, Sweet Fanny Adams, which showcased a harder rock sound. They also had their first self-written hit with \"Fox on the Run\", which reached number two in the UK and number five in the US in 1975. The song appeared on their next album, Desolation Boulevard, which also included a re-recorded version of \"Ballroom Blitz\", a Chinn/Chapman song that had been a hit in Europe but not in America. The song became a smash hit in the US, reaching number five on the Billboard Hot 100. aa16f39245
