barthel was a hard worker and dedicated to his cause. he wrote magazine articles on the health benefits of nudism and, with his lifelong friend, harold hale, owned the american league for physical culture. in 1935, he bought a large farm on the delaware, within easy reach of the beaches of delaware bay. barthel had read of members of the german clubs in germany who had made their vacation homes on seashores. he asked his friends how they might make a similar home and brought the idea to his own friends, who worked with him to create a meadow where anyone could relax and heal the mind, body and soul. membership in the american league for physical culture was restricted to 18 and older men. the main requirements for membership were that they be healthy, disciplined, clean, well-groomed and co-operative. their only clothing requirement was a bathing suit.
in 1924, a man named thomas coxon and his wife ethel moved to spring valley. at first, he worked as a house painter. his neighbor, a friend of barthels named nick fincher introduced him to sky farm. he often posed for his friend, and would finally be able to work nude.
at the height of the textile industry, from the 1920s to the 1960s, the united states was home to many people who worked in the textile mills. thousands of men and women worked in the paper factories in new england and the great plains, and many of them also chose to work in the underwear industry. more often than not, underwear made was tailored, and men were as vulnerable to the uncomfortable garments as women were to restrictive clothing.
