Tamil grammar is fairly complex and the major difficulty for students of Tamil is the complex grammar. This is particularly true for Tamil literature. For instance, the Tolkappiyam, the Tamil grammar and the Manimekalai are all Tamil literature classics.

Tamil is one of the languages that require internal consonant harmony (also called internal vowel harmony). This is a property of vowel and consonant harmony, which characterises many languages of South Asia. Tamil has six basic consonant clusters, each consisting of the consonant followed by an inherent vowel. For instance, the consonant pa and ta may be followed by the following inherent vowel: i, a, u, or u.

There are 4 types of tone in Tamil. The main tone is generally known as the sanku (sonorous tone). The other 3 are pulva (prestige tone), shama (subdued tone) and voma (comparison tone). The first three derive from the word pulavam (prestige). They are used to give the speaker emphasis or to add weight to a statement.

Stress in Tamil is phonemic. There are only two basic types, known as katte (short) and katthu (long). The short forms are obligatory and the long form is optional. Certain words cannot be written without the long form. For example, nam (I) is short while nam (we) is long. The long form is used wherever the word is repeated, otherwise the short form is used.

The story takes place in Sophiatown, a township of Johannesburg, in the early 1950s, shortly before the apartheid regime forcibly removed non-whites from the area to make way for white resettlement under the Group Areas Act and the Natives Resettlement Act, 1954.Philemon, a doting husband who works for a lawyer, prepares breakfast in bed for his beautiful wife, Matilda whom he calls Tilly. He does this every day, taking deep pleasure in serving his wife rather than the whites whom he is obliged to serve under apartheid. Every morning is much the same: he readies himself, cooks and wakes Matilda, who refuses to let him wait around to clean up after her. Philemon and Matilda share a communal lavatory with thirty other people who live in a backyard slum which was typical in Sophiatown.

The story is inspired by and takes place in Sophiatown, a former township near Johannesburg, South Africa, and has been adapted for the stage and screen.
