The slave trade was brought to a standstill by the American Revolution and the French Revolution (1789–1799), and Jamaicans saw their exports drop to as low as 11,000 tons (Goddard and Hunt 2002). Although the price of sugar on the international market had steadily declined, Jamaica remained economically independent of Great Britain. In 1763 the British government introduced the colony and slave trade restrictions. Jamaica was the first Caribbean country to gain independence from Great Britain.[48] The first African Queen arrived in Jamaica in 1765.[49] A second African Queen arrived in 1768.[50] In 1789, large-scale revolts broke out in several Jamaican communities, led in part by the Maroons, who were apparently dissatisfied with their treatment by the Jamaican colonial government (Goddard and Hunt 2002).
In the 1930s, the Jamaican Maroons (black people who were given freedom by their owners), with the assistance of the working people of Jamaica protested against a government proposal to limit their land.[51] In a notable incident in 1936 the Maroons led by their leader William Wallace set fire to Cué Chip - a sugarcane plantation - from which the plantation was named after.
Jamaica became the first former British colony to become part of the United States of America in 1962,[55][38] under a treaty which maintained British control of the island until independence.[46] The country's name was changed to Jamaica.[55] The new constitution provided for universal adult suffrage. Every adult black Jamaican citizen became a citizen, and black people had equal rights to every citizen. The legislation allowed the Jamaican government to appoint public officials based on ethnic criteria, which automatically discriminated against Indians and Chinese. It also allowed the Jamaican government to restrict the movements of Indians and Chinese immigrant laborers. This was challenged in the courts on the grounds that it violated the Bill of Rights, but the limitations on Chinese immigration were upheld by the courts.[52] d2c66b5586
