In 2013, HDCP was cracked by a Russian hacking group, dubbed LK-net. Their crack was first reported in The Guardian on September 15, 2013.[14] Their hack, which works on all versions of Windows since Vista, requires the user to install an application and then extract the master key from the disc using the cracking application.[15][16] It has been suggested that the LK-net cracked key has a large number of valid keys that were previously unknown.[17]
The crack can be used to reveal any stored data, including the stored user key. However, the crack is somewhat ineffective in that it only exposes the master key in the 4K UHD Blu-ray format, and does not work with anything higher than 1080p content. It works on a wide variety of computers, but is not guaranteed to work on the latest Windows Operating System (10). Although this crack can access the HDCP video stream, it does not act maliciously; it merely copies the master key and is used to access the data. Only if the master key was used in an unauthorized fashion would the attack be used maliciously.
While the encryption of discs has been cracked, the vulnerability of HDCP itself has not been demonstrated to be similar, at least in terms of practical implications. Creative and other content providers have also argued that the limitations of the system mean that a single master key can only be used once, while the crack does not allow users to use the same master key to generate multiple device keys. Further, the crack does not allow a user to make use of the master key to decrypt content that has already been locked by HDCP, which content providers argue makes the crack useless against films and shows which have been purchased by consumers and which should not be able to be decrypted without a payment. Philips, the world's largest manufacturer of TVs, argued that the crack has no practical implications because the majority of content sold in countries such as the United States is not enciphered. As of 2010, only 6% of movies sold in the US contain HDCP content, and only 1% of movies sold in the US are enciphered. In contrast, 28% of DVD movies sold in the UK are enciphered. 827ec27edc
