After installing a few updates, the system got stuck on "Greeter Main" screen. Everything was fine before and after the updates, the wifi drivers were installed without problems, no any logs or errors. Ram is 8 GB old, the CPU is i5-6500, the OS is Xubuntu 14.04 LTS and the chipset is RT5390W.
In Xubuntu 14.04 LTS and Linux Mint 15.3, my RT5390R won't work, I do not have the same problem in Windows or other Linux distributions. I have already tried the driver propietary drivers, with the last available driver 4.8_5.1.1_ZO192051 everything's ok except that I can't activate the WPA2 security mode because the Wi-Fi connection is unsecure in the Wi-Fi manager.
I had the problem that the wifi would lose its gateway after a few minutes. After HP help desk instructed me to reload drives and all the other common suggested fixes it was just as bad. I connected the laptop to the router by wire and it worked fine confirming it was wifi problem I then moved the laptop closer to the router and it was fine. I tried other rooms in house it was OK but in the kitchen where we originally had the problem it still kept losing the gateway. Then I notice I could see my more routers from neighbours in the kitchen than elsewhere. The short answer was the fault was rf interference from a neighbours router. A ping test confirmed I was losing 20% of packets of data. I changed channel on my router and all is now OK d2c66b5586
