Lee has done an incredible job of representing the text in such a way that it is impossible to read in one sitting, and yet the film is not too difficult to understand, even for children. The film is well-paced and the characters are all well-developed, though there is some interesting development of the relationship between Pi and Richard Parker. It is easy to picture how the situations are described in the book, and though it does not always perfectly track the text, the book and the film are so similar that it hardly matters.
The year is 1823. When a boy named Pi Patel is shipwrecked in the middle of the Indian Ocean, he is saved by a tiger. But when he wakes up, he is alone on a small island. Pi is befriended by a young orangutan, and they build a raft, and, with the help of a friendly Bengal tiger, they set off to find help. Through all this, Pi learns about the fragility of life. He learns the power of faith and the importance of family.
