Designed by the architectural firm of Donald Deskey & Co. in collaboration with the architectural firm of Walter A. Heald, the Singer Building was built between seven and eight months. Construction began on April 14, 1905, and the building was completed on September 26, 1905, at a cost of $14 million. The building was over two years in construction, with $2 million in excess cost.[2] It was the second-largest office building to be built in New York City at the time of its completion and was immediately recognized as the city's largest office building.[2] The building was the 16th-tallest in New York City, at, and had an estimated building area and was 1,182 feet (353 m) long and 153 feet (46 m) wide with a steel frame; a brick cladding outside allowed for a 15-story building. The original cast-iron columns were rebar corroded and had to be individually replaced. The face-brick or brownstone cladding was pulled away up to the cornice, and the frame was uncovered and the rust was removed.[7][9]
The building was wrapped in a vast system of open canyons, which allowed for larger offices. The unequal distribution of floor space was arranged to block the canyons; the floors of the building were numbered, with the ones on the ends of the canyons being the 11th and 12th floors of the building and those in the center being the seventh and eighth floors. This caused an unusual Manhattan street pattern in which the 16th and 17th floors of the building were in the middle of residential streets. This was partially rectified by the construction of a new east-west street on the 17th floor, which, until the 2010s, was an unused, unopened gallery.[7][8][54][115]
The original building was constructed in the Beaux-Arts style. It featured illuminated frieze, pilasters and terra-cotta ornamentation and was symbolically aligned to the corner of Broadway and Liberty Streets.[2][40] It was one of the last great office skyscrapers built in New York City using the Beaux-Arts style. d2c66b5586
