XCode Tools only supports gcc, the open source version of gnu compiler collection (3.4.6). This version of gcc appears to be the only version that Apple has included that supportsg77. This version of gcc is not in this distribution. Apple is not providing a default replacement. If you wish to use g77, or any other compiler, you will have to compile it yourself using XCode Tools.

FreeBSD 6.2 and a recent version of gnu compiler collection (4.7.1) have

already removed g77 support. FreeBSD 6.1 has no g77 support and was nevera target for installation. This release changes the default compiler on thetarget to gfortran.

Warning: gcc does not warn you when you are compiling source files with errors. This is a problem when using packages like pip and pep8, which automatically compile files with errors. So whenever possible, use the flags listed in the gcc manpage to disable warnings.

If you have installed gcc 8.3 or later, you can use the command-line option -std=gnu11 or -std=gnu++11 to change your compiler to use the GNU standards. This may throw errors, so you may need to add -fno-strict-aliasing and -fstack-protector (see the compiler manpage for details).

The GNU fortran77 compiler (g77) and the GNU fortran90 compiler (gfortran-mp) are not maintained by the GNU project. They are provided as an

alternative to GCC, but are not GNU-compatible. It is recommended that GNU users should try to use gfortran instead.
