The 2017 animated film Zootopia is not only noteworthy for its incredible message, but also for being the first animated movie to win the Academy Award for best picture. The film revolves around police officer Nick Wilde and his partner Judy Hopps, who must work together to solve a case involving a missing fox named Finnick. The story is set on the grounds of Zootopia, where predators and prey live side by side. The film has a simple message that resonates well with the audiences: it's not what you are, but who you are that matters.
The characters themselves are also likable and memorable. Judy's unique voice and infectious personality make her the perfect central character. It is no surprise that she was nominated for best actress, and wins this year for her performance in the movie. Also, the story is very well told, and the soundtrack and direction is superb. Zootopia is a good film, and an all-time classic in the Disney canon.
It's a contemporary yet timeless look at life in America. Love her or hate her, McDormand holds the screen magnificently, and is a major reason for Nomadland's success. The rest of the supporting cast, especially Wes Studi, are also impeccably cast. And to put it in perspective, cinematography on Nomadland is perhaps the best in recent memory.
