A team led by Sandom tried to resolve the evolutionary puzzle surrounding the decline of megaherbivores. They reconstructed the evolution of grasslands in the tropical forests of central and east Africa, a significant change in climate and vegetation. They found that the megaherbivores they examined, including horse-like elephants, giraffes, antelopes, rhinos and hippos, began to disappear some 4.5m years ago, during the late Miocene epoch. This corresponded with the inception of grasslands in the region, which previously had been covered by forests.
Now, by analysing a range of mammalian remains discovered over the past five years in Ethiopia, researchers have been able to identify the timing of the demise of some of these animals. Using a method called bone histology, the scientists revealed that the woolly mammoth, musk ox, giraffe and other early large herbivores experienced a sudden decline in population at the end of the Pliocene and into the Pleistocene, with only a few individuals surviving into the following epochs. In contrast, the hippopotamus, rhino and elephant were the last large herbivores to become extinct, more than 1m years later in the Pleistocene epoch.
The researchers studied the remains of hyaenodonts, large, plant-eating Mesozoic mammals that include the first horses. These fossils were excavated in recent years in the Afar region of Ethiopia, close to the African Rift Valley, and were dated using radiocarbon and uranium-series methods. Their conclusions are drawn from a number of individual cases, including more than 30 cattle-sized hyaenodonts.
